I was approved for Flash Fire and realized it was the #2 in the series so I read both of these books this last weekend because they were so good! These books are hilariously delicious! Nick is the friend, boyfriend, sidekick, fan fic author we all need and deserve. His humor was so amazing and what my sarcastic heart yearned for.
The Extraordinaries:
In The Extraordinaries the longing between Nick and his love for Shadow Star the city’s superhero was so sweet. As he wrote amazing fan fiction about them being together. But as the story unfolds we learn more about Shadow Star and his arch nemesis Pyro Storm. So many secrets about relationships that just made me giggle and squeal! I absolutely loved Nick. I loved how the parents were so accepting of their choices and sexuality. I mean even showing how to make preventatives which made me laugh and give me ideas for my kids cause it is my purpose to embarrass them. Nick the main character is neurodiverse and he thinks is a weakness and that his family and peers are judging him. But they are just trying to protect him.
Flash Fire:
I had to start Flash Fire right! Seth and Nick are the best of friends and I love a good ascot and cravat, I can relate. We discover the secret identities of our two Extraordinaries and their motivations at the end of the first one. In this book we discover new super heroes, organically and lab made. The hilarity continues as the teen romance continues as well. The blushing, gushing, flirting is just the best mixed in with the super hero dynamics and the sarcastic banter and eye rolls of their friends.
I forgot to mention Gibby and Jazz in the previous review but they are just amazing!
Omg the setup at the end to the next book! OMG how will I survive?! I also need to figure out my catch phrase I’m jealous of all the perfect phrases. I love all the representation in this book!
Thank you @torteen and @netgalley for the E-ARC for my honest and voluntary review.
Synopsis: The Extraordinaries
Some people are extraordinary. Some are just extra. TJ Klune’s YA debut, The Extraordinaries, is a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD and the heroes he loves.
Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right?
After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City’s mightiest hero (and Nick’s biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he’ll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick’s best friend (and maybe the love of his life).
Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl meets Marissa Meyer’s Renegades in TJ Klune’s YA debut.
Synopsis: Flash Fire
Flash Fire is the explosive sequel to The Extraordinaries by USA Today bestselling author TJ Klune!
Nick landed himself the superhero boyfriend of his dreams, but with new heroes arriving in Nova City it’s up to Nick and his friends to determine who is virtuous and who is villainous. Which is a lot to handle for a guy who just wants to finish his self-insert bakery AU fanfic.
