I listened in to the author zoom chat with @lovearctually at the end of August and I picked this as my BOTM but just read it since I wanted to use it as my prompt for this month, book about science for #playbookers on fb.
Omg you guys! 😍🥰🤯😘💀👩🔬😘💋
I want to read it again!
In the chat Ali talked about how this started as a fanfic and evolved into this 20 chapter novel that she worked into this beautiful book. Though if you look at the cover and the name of the main character is Adam you see the Reylo love happening.
We start the book with a chance meeting an akward expired contact incident where our MC Olive ducks into a bathroom and meets a surly tall deep voiced blurr of a man that she assumes is a phD student that gives her great advice to convince her to keep going with her grad interviews. He’s always in the back of her mind but she never knew who he was.
Fast forward a few years in and she is trying to get her friend to date the guy she likes but she had gone on a few dates with and her friend deemed him off limits. In her desperate haste to get her to think she’s moved on she pretends she’s dating and kisses the first guy she sees and it happens to be the Professor everyone is scared of.
Let the hilarity ensue as she explains her predicament ends up in a fake dating arrangement, gets into a research grant she wanted, catches feelings, gets to talk at a important conference, gets sexually harassed, wait what?
As I’ve discovered academics is a good old boy field and women have to work extra hard to be taken seriously.
Everyone needs a friend like Malcolm! Omg double date please! She had such a great friend group!
This book made me seriously swoon! That hotel one bed ok there were two beds but really! The banter and tally of title IX complaints were hilarious! I was offended by the hate on pumpkin spice though but agree it shouldn’t be in everything just coffee and candles lol.
Thank you @berkleyromance and @netgalley for the e-ARC for my honest and voluntary review.
I took the picture before I got my BOTM – look at my stickers!

Synopsis
As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn’t believe in lasting romantic relationships–but her best friend does, and that’s what got her into this situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks: Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees.
That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor–and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford’s reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive’s career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding…six-pack abs.
Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.
