“Your voices matter, your dreams matter, your lives matter. Be the roses that grow in the concrete.”
“That’s the problem. We let people say stuff, and they say it so much that it becomes okay to them and normal for us. What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn’t be?”
“Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right.”
This book is full of so many truths.
I absolutely loved this book and at the same time wish it was just fiction. This book is a few years old now but I keep seeing it everywhere.
I was in constant goosebumps, anxiety, rage, and wanted to punch someone. This book made me feel so much! I’ve met every single one of these characters in my life. Friends, family, law enforcement, heard good and horrible opinions firsthand… I loved all the main characters!
I loved the parental relationships with the children and when the mom draws their name out when they were in trouble, I noticed that’s something I do. The parents fear for their children’s lives and the children want their voices to be heard.
I’m a 90s00s teen and if salt n Pepa and Back That thang up come on – I’m auto grinding. And I love the Stevie Wonder Happy birthday song. I don’t if it’s a cultural thing as a generational thing, geographical thing. I swear they would play it at the roller skating rink.
My husband sent the link of this shirt to me since he wanted it and asked if I wanted one too. The front is a fist made up of names of victims and when I clicked the picture to the back and literally got full body goosebumps when I saw what the red said. We ordered last month and just got them. All that’s happening terrifies me, the lack of respect for human life, the lawlessness of acts described like in this book and then justifying it behind a system that’s broken.
I am sitting here listening to Obama giving his eulogy at John Lewis’ memorial and I miss an educated speaker that stands up for equal rights, that gives motivation and inspiration. #bemorelikejohn #VOTE!VOTE!VOTE!
